How to Declutter Your Car

If you’re tired of driving around in a messy car then clean it up! Decluttering a car is infinitely easier than decluttering a whole house and there are many benefits. You will feel happier and more energetic once the useless stuff is cleared out. If a friend needs a lift you won’t feel embarrassed to offer one. Lost items will be found and fewer things will be lost in the future. As a bonus, decluttering your car will give you practice to move on to house decluttering (if you need to do that too!)

How to start? Estimate how much time and energy you will need based on the amount of clutter. Perhaps tackle only a small area at a time, for example, just the front seat or front floor area. You want to avoid giving up part way through. And you will want to factor in time at the end of your session to put away the odds and ends. Once you’ve decided the scope of the project, start on an initial rough sort. Pull everything out and sort it into two categories: keepers in a box(es) and trash in a bag. Indecisions can go in the box as well.

The next step is to do a second sort on the box of keepers. If the weather is too hot or cold then bring the box(es) of keepers into the house where it is more comfortable. Further sort these things into: 1) stuff to put back into the vehicle, 2) things to put away somewhere in the home, 3) items to give away, and 4) trash.

Lastly, deal with the separate piles. This is the most difficult step for many folks and it is often neglected as energy wanes. This is precisely why I suggest tackling one small section of the vehicle at a time – to make putting away less burdensome. How to deal? Replace the things meant to stay in the vehicle. Return household items to their rightful places. Bring the giveaways to their new homes. Put the trash in a bin.

Admire your clutter free car and congratulate yourself for a job (or part) well done. Enjoy the pleasure and lightness of driving your newly decluttered car.
